World’s leading

wireless axle counters

The Green Deal has the objective of transforming the EU into a climate-neutral and circular economy. The railways, being environmentally friendly and energy-efficient, play a key role in the shift towards a sustainable and climate-resilient EU. By 2030, train traffic is expected to have grown 40%. Only by digitizing the European railways can such growth be managed.

Today’s railway infrastructure features quantities of mechanical and electrical trackside equipment requiring cables for power supply and data transfer. The future of train traffic is digital and wireless. New technologies will change the rules completely. In a few years’ time, digital advancements will allow rail infrastructure operators to dispense with most of their trackside equipment and create a centralized digital train control and traffic management system. Any remaining trackside equipment such as axle counters will be wireless. Not having to dig for cables will not only substantially cut the cost of implementation and maintenance, but more importantly, will significantly speed up the roll-out of ERTMS in Europe.

The wireless axle counter developed by Rail Connected will replace legacy rail technology and will lead to a higher density of measuring points in the railway track, resulting in greater efficiency, higher capacity and lower cost.

Wireless Axle Counter

  • Is able to detect:

    • number of wheels passing by

    • direction

    • speed

    • type of train

    • train composition

  • Is completely wireless:

    • battery powered and runs up to 7 years on just one battery

    • supports several LPWan networks for data transmission

    • no cables are required for data and electricity

    • easy and quick installation

  • Has an accuracy of 99,9% for detecting wheels

  • Is used for train positioning. Trains can be tracked through (remote) areas and industrial complexes

  • Comes with a real-time train positioning web-based viewer
